Escaped Academia but caught by Boost… What was I thinking?

Boost is one of the most influential projects in the C++ world.
It is a collection of peer-reviewed, open source libraries that extend the capabilities of the C++ standard library. Many parts of Boost — such as smart pointers, regular expressions, or unordered containers — have directly influenced or been adopted into the C++ standard itself. What makes Boost unique is its rigorous peer review process, where each new library is openly evaluated by the community for design quality, documentation, portability, and long-term maintainability before being accepted.

At the center of each peer review is the Review Manager. This role is not about being the ultimate authority on the library’s technical domain, but about ensuring the process is fair, structured, and productive. The Review Manager announces the review, encourages participation, tracks feedback, and finally summarizes the outcome with a recommendation for acceptance (or rejection).

Recently, Matt Borland from the C++ Alliance contacted me to act as Review Manager for Boost.Bloom, a new library by Joaquín M López Muñoz. Boost.Bloom provides an efficient implementation of Bloom filters, a well-known probabilistic data structure for fast membership testing, widely used in applications like databases, distributed systems, and caches.

I saw this invitation as both a responsibility and a privilege. Having used and taught modern C++ for years, I know how much Boost has shaped the way we write code today. Acting as a Review Manager was exciting but also a little intimidating: I wanted to do justice to both the library and the community. While Joaquín and Matt were extremely supportive and helped me through the process, I realized that there aren’t many clear guidelines for new Review Managers. That’s why I decided to write this article — to share my experience and provide practical material that I wish I had when I started.

Think of yourself as part host, part editor, and part judge. You don’t need to be the domain expert — you need to make sure the conversation produces a fair and useful consensus.


📅 Timeline of a Typical Review

  1. Before the review: Check library readiness, agree on a review window with the author.
  2. Start of the review: Send an announcement email to the Boost list.
  3. During the review: Monitor discussion, nudge participation, and keep tone respectful.
  4. Closing the review: Send a wrap-up reminder.
  5. After the review: Publish a decision email with your recommendation.

The First Email: Review Announcement

The very first email you send as Review Manager is the review announcement.
This message sets the tone for the review: it tells the community what is being reviewed, when the review will take place, where to find the library and documentation, and why the library is useful.

⚠️ Important nuance: this “announcement” email is typically sent ~1 month before the review actually starts. On the first day of the review, a second email is usually sent to mark the official opening.

The Official Start Email: “Review Begins”

Once the review period arrives, the Review Manager sends a “Review Begins Today” email.
This is the formal kickoff: it marks the exact opening date, reminds the community of the review period, and encourages active participation. Unlike the earlier announcement (sent in advance to raise awareness), this one emphasizes action — it asks people to read, test, and submit their reviews.

It also usually includes guiding questions so reviewers know what to look for, which lowers the barrier for participation.

👉 Compared to the announcement, this email is more directive: it asks reviewers to participate, provides structured guiding questions, and officially marks the review as open. Starting from then, reviewers will chime in during the review period, and the authors will answer their questions.

As Review Manager, I decided to let discussions flourish as long as they remain peaceful and productive. The Boost mailing list is a passionate community, and debates can sometimes become a bit heated. No one enjoys dealing with negativity in their free time — especially when all participants are volunteering their energy and expertise. That’s why, if any frustration or tension arises, it is part of the Review Manager’s responsibility to gently step in and bring the focus back to constructive dialogue. A calm and non-violent message helps de-escalate without shutting down the exchange, for example:

“Thank you both for your perspectives — I can see that you are approaching the problem from different angles. Let’s remember that our shared goal here is to evaluate Boost.Bloom constructively and fairly. Could I suggest that we focus on clarifying the specific technical concerns raised, so that the author and others can respond directly? This way we keep the discussion useful for everyone following along.”

The goal is not to police or silence, but to remind participants of the common purpose and to invite them back into a respectful, technical frame of mind.


Mid-Review Reminder & Closing Note

During a Boost review, it’s good practice to send reminder emails and a closing announcement. These keep momentum going and make sure participants don’t miss their chance to contribute.

These two small gestures help maintain transparency, community engagement, and goodwill.

The mid-review reminder helps nudge potential reviewers who may have been busy at the start of the review. Without it, many valuable voices might never contribute, especially since reviewers often need a little encouragement or a deadline to push them into action.

The Final Decision Email (Review Report)

At the end of the review, the Review Manager publishes a final report to the mailing list.
This is the official conclusion of the review: it summarizes the community feedback, records the decision (accept/reject/accept with conditions), and sets the direction for integration and future work.

This email is critical for three reasons:

  1. Transparency — it documents the community’s feedback and the Review Manager’s reasoning.
  2. Accountability — it ensures the decision is not arbitrary, but grounded in the review discussion.
  3. Record keeping — it becomes the canonical reference when the library’s history is revisited years later.

It is important to emphasize that the Boost Review Process is not a simple vote. While community input is essential, the final responsibility lies with the Review Manager, who must make the acceptance decision and define any conditions for it.

The challenging part of this role is not just counting how many reviewers say “accept” versus “reject,” but rather carefully weighing the substance of the reviews. Some reviewers bring deep domain expertise, others provide valuable user-level feedback, and sometimes opinions may even conflict.

A good way to think of it is like being a journal editor or a judge: you don’t decide by tallying up “yes” and “no,” but by looking at the strength and clarity of the arguments. The Review Manager’s task is to listen to all perspectives, recognize which concerns are critical versus which are minor preferences, and then synthesize these into a fair and balanced conclusion. The goal is not only to serve the library author but also to uphold the long-term quality and integrity of Boost as a whole.

🌟 Closing Thought

Being a Review Manager is less about being an expert and more about being a good facilitator.

The role is about creating the conditions for constructive dialogue, keeping the process fair, and making sure every voice is heard. By doing so, you help ensure that Boost libraries remain among the best in the C++ ecosystem.

On a personal note, I felt proud and excited to be trusted with this responsibility. It was also a moment of recognition for my expertise and a real sense of inclusion in the Boost community. I gave my best effort to keep the process running smoothly, but of course not everyone always agreed — some reviewers had different opinions, and a few minor conflicts did arise. Still, those moments were valuable learning opportunities about communication and moderation.

The human aspect mattered as much as the technical one: I came closer to many individuals in the community, I was invited to CppCon2025 in Denver and even had the chance to meet a Boost author in Paris last week — we visited the Louvre together and shared a meal at a (very) French restaurant. Experiences like that reminded me that open-source is not just about code, but also about people and connections. People are amazing.

So the time spent was far from useless: I deepened my understanding of Bloom filters, gained insights into the art of managing reviews, and built stronger ties with the Boost community. Plus, I can admit it — it feels pretty good to show off at work that I had the privilege of managing a Boost peer review. Reviewing for Boost doesn’t just make the libraries better, I think it makes us better too.
